Blue Peter, Green Peter, Aliens and Reading Room

CBBC's flagship programme is taking its audience and their commitment to the environment to a new level that's literally out of this world. Building on the success of its inaugural Green Peter edition last May, this spring's Green Peter special will use new levels of interactivity to get across the message of 'act now to save the earth.'

The creative idea for getting this message across is a futuristic scenario featuring current Blue Peter presenters as aliens travelling back in time to 2007. The presenters examine the evidence that warns of climate change within a generation and share stories of children in the UK who are already helping to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.

Green Peter will broadcast on CBBC One and live online at the Blue Peter website to inspire children to act now on climate change. The Green Peter microsite features extended video reports and a 'totaliser' to chart the progress made by viewers signing up to Green challenges. Viewers are encouraged to share their own Green stories and advice online, with the best winning a special green Blue Peter badge.

The BBC have asked award winning digital communications agency Reading Room to provide the creative and digital expertise to specifically target 7-12 year olds.

Reading Room are also creating animated characters for a series of short films to be screened from late May 2007. The films will be inter-cut with clips from old Blue Peter episodes and conclude by showing the aliens appreciating the beauty of an unpolluted earth and wondering why humans have destroyed it.

Green Peter's message is that we have to act now to save the earth and that everyone can play a part however small each step may seem. The microsite will offer a deeper exploration of the issues and encourage children to take the initiative in helping make the world a greener place.

Margaret Manning, CEO Reading Room
"We are delighted to be working with the BBC on this exciting project that will really make a difference to children's lives. Our creative animations and interactive micro site will engage and inspire children's imaginations".
