The agency-led digital product design training program Flipside has been nominated for a D&AD Impact award, showing its effective and dedicated efforts to improve industry skills in young people.
Created in collaboration with agencies Reading Room, Beyond, Made By Many, ustwo and Sennap, and delivered by The Skills Lab in partnership with A New Direction’s Create Jobs team, Flipside is a digital design training experience aimed at helping young East Londoners break into the industry.
About the program, Reading Room’s Strategic Development Director Kirstie Buchanan said: “We’re delighted to be working with other like-minded agencies and learning providers to craft a program that gives the younger generation valuable exposure to the digital and creative industry.”
The program allowed 12 young and diverse East Londoners to train for three months through a combination of foundational classroom learning and hands-on industry experience.
The participants are paid throughout the course and given essential mentoring and support along the way. From customer research and prototyping to teamwork and cross-disciplinary collaboration theory, they’re able to gain deep insight into the digital product design process.
Reading Room worked closely with The Skills Lab and other agencies to develop exciting content for the course, which aims to teach technical skills and develop mindsets, soft skills and employability skills of budding digital talent.
The D&AD Impact award recognizes original and transformative ideas that do well by doing good. It consists of 12 categories, ranging from everything from financial engagement to championing diversity and helping the environment.
The awards are for everyone who believes in the power of creativity to change the world – whether entrepreneurs, agencies, social enterprises or innovators – and accept anything from beta projects, campaigns, initiatives to fully fledged projects.
Flipside will join the awards’ list of past iconic finalists, which include Jamie Oliver, Getty Images, Squarespace and Unilever.
