DrupalCamp Delhi 2026: AI, Community and the Future of Developer Roles

Aastha Shrivastava, our Senior Drupal Developer, attended DrupalCamp Delhi 2026 and shares her key takeaways on AI, community, and the evolving role of developers.

A long-awaited return, DrupalCamp Delhi 2026 brought together over 150 developers from across India for two days of discussion, learning, and collaboration. After a seven-year gap, the event offered a timely opportunity to reflect on how the Drupal ecosystem is evolving, particularly in response to the rapid rise of AI.

Across sessions and conversations, one theme stood out clearly: AI is no longer a future consideration. It is already influencing how developers think, work, and build.

At Reading Room, we were proud to sponsor the event and support a community that continues to play a key role in shaping the future of Drupal.

AI at the Centre of the Conversation

Artificial intelligence was not just one of many topics at DrupalCamp Delhi. It was the thread running through almost every session and discussion.

This was reflected in the keynote by James Jackson Abrahams, which explored the Drupal AI Initiative and demonstrated how tools such as Drupal Forge are beginning to embed AI into the platform. The direction was clear: AI is becoming part of Drupal’s core capability, with practical applications already taking shape.

A fireside chat with Jacob Singh, former CTO of Blinkit, expanded this further by focusing on “The Future of Work”. The discussion moved beyond tools and into the broader implications of AI, particularly how it is reshaping careers, decision-making, and long-term skill development.

A Shift in Developer Value

A consistent message emerged from across the event: the role of the developer is changing.

While technical implementation remains important, the emphasis is beginning to shift towards planning, architecture, and problem definition. As AI tools become more capable, the ability to define requirements clearly and make informed decisions is becoming increasingly valuable.

Domain knowledge and communication are now critical differentiators. Understanding what to build, and why, is becoming just as important as the technical execution itself.

The Importance of Community

In a landscape that is evolving this quickly, community plays a vital role.

Staying up to date with AI developments is no longer just about tools or documentation. It requires ongoing discussion, shared learning, and exposure to different perspectives. Events like DrupalCamp Delhi provide exactly that environment.

This was particularly evident in the contribution sprint, where new contributors were supported in making their first contributions to Drupal. These moments highlight the strength of open source, not just as a technology model, but as a collaborative learning ecosystem.

What This Means in Practice

The takeaway from DrupalCamp Delhi is not that AI will replace developers, but that it will redefine what makes them effective.

Technical skills alone are no longer enough. Continuous learning, adaptability, and active participation in communities are becoming essential.

As AI continues to evolve, developers who can combine technical expertise with strategic thinking and communication will be best placed to succeed.

A Community That Continues to Evolve

DrupalCamp Delhi reinforced the importance of community in shaping the future of the platform.

Beyond the sessions, the event created space for meaningful conversations, knowledge sharing, and new connections. It demonstrated that while technology continues to change, the strength of Drupal remains in its people.

As the ecosystem adapts to AI, this community-driven approach will continue to play a crucial role in ensuring that innovation remains practical, inclusive, and grounded in real-world needs.
